Biochar
Biochar is a carbon-rich stable and lightweight solid. High-quality Biochar is capable of sequestering atmospheric carbon and is suitable for various applications (e.g. agriculture, construction materials and water filtration). Typically, high-quality biochar is produced via a pyrolysis process, characterized by controlled thermal decomposition under specific parameters.
A SUSTAINABLE GREEN PRODUCT THE DRIVES DECARBONIZATION
- Carbon Sequestration: Biochar is a ‘Carbon Negative’ solution that effectively removes CO2 from the atmosphere. It is estimated that for every 1KG of Bluefield’s Biochar sequestered, it is equivalent to 2.5KG of CO2 removed from the atmosphere.
- Highly Effective Carbon Sink Lasting Centuries: Due to its stable and inert nature, Biochar serves as a carbon-sink preventing CO2 from releasing back to the atmosphere for thousands of years.
“WIN-WIN-WIN” SOLUTION CONTRIBUTING TO A CIRCULAR ECONOMY
- Treating Waste Sustainably: Biomass waste is diverted from landfills and incineration, which typically emits tremendous volumes of CO2 to the atmosphere.
- Converting Waste to Valuable Resource: Biomass waste is converted into valuable resources such as Biochar, Syngas and Pyrolysis-oil with numerous commercial applications.
- Sequestering Biochar Enables Carbon Footprints Reduction: Government Bodies, Companies and Organizations can utilize the Carbon Removal Credits to offset their carbon footprints, facilitating progress towards Net Zero Targets.
WIDE COMMERCIAL APPLICATIONS OF BIOCHAR
- Agriculture/Horticulture: Biochar is an excellent soil enhancer and is also suitable to be used with composts, fertilizers and peat moss.
- Construction Materials: Biochar can be infused into construction materials, thereby reducing net carbon footprint of the construction materials.
- Water Filtration: Biochar’s highly porous structure makes it a wonderful solution for water filtration. It effectively removes contaminants such as heavy metals, organic pollutants, and pathogens, providing a natural and efficient filtration system.
Bluefield is the Sole Biochar Producer across Asia Pacific with dual certifications from European Biochar Certificate (EBC) and International Biochar Initiative (IBI) bodies, which endorse the quality of Bluefield’s Biochar.

The European Biochar Certificate (EBC): Ensuring Safe and Sustainable Biochar Production
The European Biochar Certificate (EBC) is designed to mitigate biochar production and usage risks, ensuring its safety for health and the environment. Historically, charcoal has been vital for various uses, and modern research has expanded biochar’s applications since 2015. Traditional kiln methods are inefficient and harmful, whereas modern pyrolysis plants now produce biochar sustainably. EBC introduces a comprehensive assessment mechanism based on current research to guarantee that biochar production meets stringent quality standards. This certification ensures producers comply with sustainable practices, providing reliable quality assurance. As biochar technology evolves, the EBC is regularly updated to incorporate the latest scientific and technical developments, maintaining alignment with environmental goals.
Currently a voluntary standard in Europe, the EBC is mandatory in Switzerland for agricultural biochar and influences regulations in several other countries. By promoting transparent monitoring and quality assurance, EBC supports sustainable biochar production globally, helping establish biochar as a credible and valuable product in the market.
The World Biochar Certificate (WBC): Global Standard for Sustainable Biochar Production
Building on the European Biochar Certificate’s success, the World Biochar Certificate (WBC) sets a competitive and valuable benchmark for biochar producers worldwide. WBC aims to foster a uniform standard of excellence, ensuring non-European producers who meet these high standards gain recognition and marketability. The WBC emphasises stringent and sustainable production practices, ensuring biochar is produced from sustainable feedstock sources. This certification is awarded exclusively to companies demonstrating true environmental stewardship, avoiding instances of greenwashing.
WBC-certified biochar producers use efficient processes supported by thorough scientific approaches to ensure proper carbon sequestration, where carbon can be locked away for centuries. By ensuring the highest quality of biochar, the WBC enhances market trust and boosts adoption in various applications across consumers and industries. It guarantees that biomass feedstock is free from contaminants and safe for the environment, maximizing the sustainability of carbon sequestration efforts. WBC supports the global recognition of biochar’s benefits, establishing it as a credible and valuable product worldwide.
The International Biochar Initiative (IBI): Promoting Sustainable Biochar Systems
The International Biochar Initiative (IBI) is dedicated to promoting the sustainable use of biochar through stakeholder collaboration, adherence to environmental and ethical standards, and support for economically viable biochar systems. IBI facilitates the generation, review, and dissemination of information on all aspects of biochar, fostering education and networking through various events and programs. The organization advances international collaboration across science, industry, agriculture, and government sectors to discover and demonstrate biochar applications, develop policy incentives, and establish quality standards.
IBI works closely with industry partners to identify and demonstrate cost-effective uses for biochar, ensuring that research, production, and marketing practices meet high ethical and safety standards. By creating and advocating for biochar standards and policies, IBI builds public and regulatory confidence in biochar products and their intended uses. To stay informed about the latest developments and impacts of the biochar industry, stakeholders can subscribe to IBI’s monthly Global Biochar Industry Newsletter and explore their comprehensive annual reports. Through its efforts, IBI supports the growth and sustainability of the biochar industry globally, ensuring it contributes positively to environmental and economic goals.
